When you are traveling on the road trying to stick to a healthy diet can be a very difficult task. Not only are you in an unfamiliar place, but not having access to your own kitchen makes it impossible to whip up something nutritious.

However, just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy along the way. Here are 5 tips that will help you stay on track while traveling so you can avoid packing on additional weight.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead will prove to be a very smart move for those who are about to hit the road and travel.

The more you know before you go, the easier it will be to stay on track with your health and nutrition plan.

Before you hit the road get online and research the dining options that are available. You should also find out what grocery stores are in close proximity to where you will be staying.

Find out what you will be doing each day so you can figure out when you will be eating your meals.

If you plan on working out while you are away, find a gym that has most of the equipment you will need.

While this may sound like a lot of work, taking the time to do research will save you a ton of cash and calories while you are away from home.

To make tracking your calories easier consider logging all of your meals into MyFitnessPal ahead a time.

This way you will know exactly what you will be eating before you even get to a restaurant.

Stick To Your Regular Routine As Much As Possible

You’re traveling so we know it can be difficult to stick to your regular routine. However, do your best to eat the same way you do when you are at home.

For example, if you eat four meals a day plus a snack, try to stick with that routine while away.

If this isn’t possible just focus on getting in enough meals throughout the day. Sometimes when you are away, be it a family vacation or a trip for work, it’s easy to get caught up in various activities and forget to eat.

Try not to go without eating for too long as it will lead to you overeating and getting bloated.

Drink Plenty of Water

Traveling or not, water will always be your best friend. When you are traveling it’s very easy to get dehydrated. Especially if you are traveling during the warmer months of the year.

Not only can dehydration lead to health issues, but it can also cause you to have cravings you normally wouldn’t have.

To help prevent dehydration while traveling make it a point to pack a reusable water bottle. You should also make it a point to carry that water bottle with you everywhere you go.

The good news is getting access to water is fairly easy. Some airports even have refill stations for water bottles.

That means you have no excuse not to drink plenty of water while you are traveling.

Control Your Portions

When you travel you will more than likely eat out most of the time. No matter where or what you eat, the most important thing you need to do is control your portions.

As you very well know, these days restaurants are known for their unbelievably large portions. One serving at a restaurant is easily three times as much as you should eat.

So instead of just diving right in, request a to-go container and put half of your food in it before you start to eat. This will prevent you from eating too much in one setting.

After you have placed half of the food in the to go container, you can start eating as you normally would.

If at all possible, try not to rush through your meal. Take your time and eat slowly. This will prevent you from stuffing your face and feeling bloated afterwards.

Go Easy on The Treats

While vacation is the time for you to let your hair down and just enjoy yourself, you still need to watch the treats.

If you overindulge on treats you will return home a few pounds heavier than when you left. And we know you don’t want that to happen!!

The best way to prevent this from happening is to simply watch your treats.

Now we are in no way saying you shouldn’t enjoy yourself and eat all the things you normal don’t have access to when you are at home.

If there is a special ice cream you would like to try then by all means go for it. Just don’t have 5 scoops.

When it boils down to it you can enjoy all the local treats if you do so in moderation.
