And believe it or not, the foods you eat can either help you better manage stress, or they can exacerbate those feelings of frustration.

We all know that caffeine can instantly boost ones mood. This is due to its ability to stimulate dopamine activity.

For this very reason millions of people all over the world wake up to a cup of coffee every morning.

There is however one big problem. Besides being able to boost your mood, caffeine can also make it difficult for your body to absorb important nutrients such as vitamin D and B vitamins.

Diving head first into your favorite pint of ice cream may be tempting when you are stressed out. But you may want to think twice before making that decision.

Most ice cream is loaded with refined sugars. Refined sugars can increase cortisol which is known as the stress hormone.

The problem with refined sugar is that your body is not able to use it all up. Unless of course you are recovering from an extremely intense workout session.

Anytime your body can’t use up all the refined sugar your blood glucose levels will start to plummet at a rapid pace.

When your blood glucose levels start to plummet your brain perceives that as a life threatening situation.

To protect you more cortisol gets secreted into your bloodstream which triggers hunger even though you have just finished eating.

This cycle leaves you feeling even more stressed than when you first started eating the ice cream.


Pretzels are a double edged sword. Not only are they high in sodium, which causes your blood pressure to rise, but they are also considered a fast digesting, refined carb which can lead to anxiety.

Pretzels are made using simple carbs which means they don’t have the fiber needed to slow down digestion. Because of this glucose levels spike and cortisol gets released into the bloodstream.

While there is no doubt pretzels are delicious, their mood boosting ability only lasts a few minutes before sending it spiraling back down.

Soy is also high in phytic acid and copper. Phytic acid is an anti nutrient that can only be decreased through fermentation, and copper is a mineral that can lead to anxiety.

If eating soy is an absolutely must for you, make it a point to stick with fermented variations such as miso or tempeh.

Both are easier to digest which means eating them won’t cause your blood sugar levels to suddenly spike which can ultimately lead to even more stress.
