When you combine these three things the chances of you reaching your health and fitness goals greatly decrease.

But don’t worry.

While these diet pitfalls can indeed be challenging, that doesn’t mean you can’t overcome them.

Dieting and Alcohol

While we would never say you need to completely eliminate alcohol from your diet, we do recommend you get familiar with calorie counts.

Alcohol contains way more calories than most people realize.

Even the low calorie versions can have over 100 calories per serving.

And that strawberry martini that you can’t seem to get enough of will set you back a minimum of 500 calories.

If you’re going to drink you have to drink smart.

A Bloody Mary has a little over 100 calories and you get some important vitamins from the tomato juice.

Pay close attention to the snacks you choose when you are out drinking.

Stay away from anything that’s deep fried and opt for healthier options such as hummus.

If you plan on being out for a few hours make it a point to pace yourself.

Don’t have several drinks in a row. You should instead have one drink or less per hour.

As with all things portion control is extremely important.

These days restaurants tend to serve supersized alcoholic beverages. Ask if you can get yours in a smaller glass.

Last but not least, make sure you drink plenty of water.

Alcohol can dehydrate you faster than almost anything else. Filling up on water will ensure you stay properly hydrated throughout the evening.

Dieting and Friends

Hanging out with your friends is a hard diet pitfall to overcome.

After all you really enjoy being with your friends and you want to spend as much time with them as you can.

When you are with your friends you are less likely to pay attention to what you are eating.

You may also feel pressure to go along with everyone else because you don’t want to be rude.

Dieting and Staying Up Late

Of all the diet pitfalls, keeping late hours may be the most common.

With so many distractions it can be very difficult to get to bed at a decent time.

However, if you are serious about reaching your health and fitness goals you must find a way to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

Start by turning off all devices 30-45 minutes before bedtime.

Bright screens make it impossible to get a good night sleep.

Exercising on a regular basis will also aid in this process.

If you need to, make a few changes to your environment. For instance, if light from outside keeps you up, consider investing in black out drapes.

If your mattress is starting to sag that means its time to replace it.

You would be surprised how a good mattress can affect your sleep.

Many people have also found success with bedtime rituals.

For example, they may read a chapter from a book or take a warm bath right before bed.

Doing so allows their mind and body to relax and give in to sleep.

No matter what you choose to do, make sure you do it consistently.

Make it a point to go to bed and wake up at the same time at least 5 days out of the week.
